When ninety-one year old Hollywood, Florida grandmother Yvonne King received word that she had only days to get out of the place she had called home for over fifty years, she could never have imagined a complete stranger would come to her rescue.

Actually, when the partially blind elderly woman was first notified she was facing losing the home she had owned for fifty years due to back taxes, she turned to a relative for help.  The relative, however, agreed to pay the taxes only if she signed the property to him with a quitclaim.  Within a few months, her time in the home was up.

When the story about the impending eviction was featured on a WSVN Channel 7 News broadcast, Jeremy Mathis knew he had to help.  He had heard the story before – not actually the same story but one all too similar.

Jeremy Mathis, co-owner of Freedom Cash Home Buyers, kicked into high gear.  He immediately picked up the phone and texted Ryan Shrouder, his litigation attorney.  Shrouder too felt passionate about helping the elderly woman as did two other attorneys who agreed to work pro bono, Andy Rosenberg and Bill Kennedy out of Coral Springs.

On the last day possible, an emergency motion was filed.

“You won’t have to leave until we get this figured out,” Schrouder announced to King on a speakerphone interview with Channel 7.

Mathis wasn’t finished with his kind deeds, however.  He proceeded to buy King lunch.  King was quick to express her heartfelt gratitude – for the legal help and for the bountiful seafood meal.

Ironically, the business Mathis owns and operates with his twin brother began with a story in much the same way.  When he and his twin brother were in high school, their grandmother’s house went into foreclosure.  By the time they were in college, the house was about to be auctioned off due to a tax debt.

The twins set into motion and raised the funds to save their grandmother’s home.  Their problem solving skills to do so became the passion they built their company, Freedom Cash Home Buyers, on.  “We are committing to helping,” Mathis stated.  And…that certainly appears to be true.

“I didn’t know I was losing my home,” King explained.

King’s relative is still taking her to court.  No one knows how it will go and many dare to speculate how it should go – who is right and who is wrong.  But one thing is for sure, King will be properly represented in court.

One kind act has become contagious, thanks to Mathis and Channel 7 news.  Dozens of other community members and people around the nation have reached out to King too.  A GoFundMe account has been set up for King’s cause as well.
